| OUR THEME PICTURE
The Phoenix is a mythical bird with a unique life cycle. When it is time to die, the Phoenix is incinerated into nothing but ashes. But where death is the end for most things, it is the beginning for the Phoenix. Because from these ashes the Phoenix is reborn into a new and beautiful creature. From the same ashes that held death for this amazing bird, life was born. In a similar way, we were slaves to sin which would lead to our death. But we, as believers, have been reborn from our old selves into new, beautiful, and pure children of God through Christ’s sacrifice for us on the cross. From death we have been reborn by the power of God’s love into life.
THE MEANINGS IN THE PICTURE
The picture merges the two different images: The Phoenix raising from the ashes, and a new believer rising from the old self– also in the ashes. This new believer is reaching toward a cross silhouetted in the Phoenix’s flames while being washed with the blood of Christ.
- The chalk outline of the old self: Romans 6:11
- The washing of blood: Titus 3:4-7
- Christ’s sacrifice on the cross: John 3:16-17
- The new creation: 2 Corinthians 5:17
